Subway Stories

Only two sang this time.

You would never know from the lilt in their voice or from the joy in their smiles, that there was a third who left. Left for that place that was the subject of so many of their songs, a testament to the swift transition of time. I can’t remember his face, but I remember him. The third part of a harmony there to lift you up.

But now there were two. And as the two voices blended, singing to all to come along this train and get on board, it became clearer that this song was not about the subway. I fingered a dollar in my pocket. Sadly these were my only condolences.
